Connect Formidable Forms to EmailOctopus

Connect Formidable Forms to EmailOctopus

Connect Formidable Forms to EmailOctopus and every form submission becomes a subscriber in the EmailOctopus list you choose. ClickSyncr for EmailOctopus adds a EmailOctopus form action, available in Formidable Lite as well as Pro: connect your API key once, pick a list, map your fields, save. No code and about two minutes per form.

Before you begin

You need three things: the ClickSyncr for EmailOctopus plugin activated, Formidable Forms active, and a EmailOctopus account with permission to create an API key. The key is stored once and shared across every supported builder on the site.

Get your EmailOctopus API key

  1. Log in to EmailOctopus and go to Developer → API keys (dashboard.emailoctopus.com/developer/api-keys).
  2. Click Add key, name it, and copy the key.
  3. Paste it into any ClickSyncr EmailOctopus panel. One key serves the whole site: once one builder saves it, every other builder reuses the connection automatically.

Treat the key like a password. Anyone holding it can read and modify your EmailOctopus audience.

Formidable Forms setup, step by step

  1. Open Actions & Notifications and add EmailOctopus (ClickSyncr). Go to Formidable → Forms, open a form, then Settings → Actions & Notifications. Click EmailOctopus (ClickSyncr) in the row of available actions; it works in Formidable Lite.
  2. Connect the action. Paste the key per action, or leave it blank to use the shared site-wide key.
  3. Choose the EmailOctopus list. The picker lists every list in your account, and the list’s own fields appear below it the moment you choose one.
  4. Map your form fields. Email is the required mapping; the rest of the list’s fields load automatically with their types shown.
  5. Optional: set a consent field. Set an optional consent field (a checkbox, acceptance or radio). A ticked box subscribes the contact right away; an unticked box sends them as pending, so EmailOctopus asks for confirmation before they join the list.
  6. Update the form. Submissions now sync on every entry.

Email, name, and list fields

Every builder maps the same schema: Email (required) plus the selected list’s own EmailOctopus fields (first name, last name and any you define), mapped by tag with each field’s type shown. Fields are per list, so the mapping rows follow the list you choose, and number fields are sent as real numbers, matching the type you set in EmailOctopus. EmailOctopus upserts contacts by email, so a repeat submission updates the same contact instead of creating a duplicate. An unmapped field is simply skipped and never overwrites existing data with a blank value.

Typed fields and honest status choices

Two details make this integration feel native. First, fields are per list: pick a list and the mapping rows show that list’s own fields, including typed number fields that are sent as real numbers. Second, the panel reads the list’s real double opt-in setting, so the subscriber-status choices always describe what will actually happen: subscribed right away, or pending until EmailOctopus’s confirmation email is clicked.

Verify the sync

Submit the form on the front end (not the admin preview) with a test address you can recognise, filling every mapped field. In EmailOctopus, open the list and find the contact. A pending contact means EmailOctopus sent its confirmation email first: either the list uses double opt-in, the form’s status is set to Pending, or the consent box was left unticked. Back in WordPress, the ClickSyncr entry in the admin bar shows per-form sync counts and the last error, if any: a quick pulse check without leaving the site.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Cause and fix
Lists don’t load after pasting the key Create the key under Developer → API keys in the EmailOctopus dashboard and paste it exactly.
The contact shows as pending That’s the confirmation flow: the list uses double opt-in, the form’s status sends pending, or the consent box was unticked. EmailOctopus subscribes them when they click the confirmation email.
A field stays empty on the contact Fields are per list. Check the mapping row and confirm the field exists on the list you selected, with a compatible type (number fields only accept numeric values).
Sync stopped working Check the admin-bar health menu for the last error. An invalid or rotated API key is the usual cause; paste the new key in any builder and it updates everywhere.

Does the action work in Formidable Lite?

Yes. The EmailOctopus (ClickSyncr) form action registers in the free Formidable Lite as well as Formidable Pro.

Can different Formidable forms use different lists?

Yes. Each form’s action chooses its own list and field map while sharing the site-wide key.
